It is no secret that plastic food storage containers contain poisonous chemicals which slowly leach into our foods.

The word 'plastic' refers to various synthetic chemical substances molded and shaped into different forms. Manufacture of plastics starts with "monomers," small molecules that have been repeated thousands or millions of times over and then assembled in long strands, called "polymers." Nearly all plastics derive from fossil fuels and natural gas.

Many of the most prominent and hazardous chemical families –heavy metals, flame retardantsphthalatesbisphenols, and fluorinated compounds – are directly related to plastics manufacturing.

Toxic products and materials found in food containers

The most common kinds of food containers for storage are plastic. It's lightweight and convenient.

  • Most takeout containers, mainly used in greasy foods, often contain PFCs (perfluorinated compounds). PFCs are a class of chemicals used extensively in products that repel water, grease, and stains.
  • You can find these in plastic food storage containers; phthalates soften hard plastic. There are about 25 types of phthalates.
  • Used to harden certain types of plastics and can find some BPA in food storage containers used at home to store leftover food.
  • This solvent chemical can and find then in polystyrene or Styrofoam food containers. These solvents help dissolve, suspend, or disperse other substances, discourage clumping and accelerate drying times.
  • PVC (aka vinyl). One of the most poisonous plastics made in the industry includes mercury, chlorine, phthalates, lead, vinyl chloride, and ethylene dichloride. You will also find vinyl in clear food packaging, cling wraps, and food containers used while manufacturing. Lunchboxes and hot-food containers are also frequently made of PVC.

Research demonstrates that BPA will leach into our foods or beverages from the containers made with BPA, especially when exposed and leaching liking into our foods. Bisphenol-A contamination linking to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease, which harms the brain, the prostate, and in fetuses and younger children and is a known endocrine disrupter.

Health problems caused by food containers

Chemicals in products often found in plastic food containers can harm your health. Unfortunately, by that time, the harm had already been done. BPA is an endocrine disruptor that contributes to chronic diseases and conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetesheart diseaseasthmacancer, infertility, low sperm countliver problems, and ADHD.

In addition, the other health concerns lining neurotoxicity, brain development, and behavioral issues in children. While one-time or occasional exposures may not harm, take precautionary measures and reduce exposures when possible.

Below you will find the best non-toxic researched food storage containers that are safer for you and your family, and all found on Amazon.

It's inactive, non-leaching, and 100% recyclable. It's elegant and shaped in any form and colored in a desired, non-toxic way. It doesn't absorb smells or flavors, and it is easy to clean and inexpensively reproduce as the raw materials are plentiful and naturally occurring.

The primary materials for container food-grade glass, officially called soda-lime glass, are silica or silicon dioxide, which is "sand," on the beach. Sodium carbonate (either soda ash, which is both naturally occurring and synthetically produced), and lime (calcium carbonate, which is found naturally in limestone, marble, or chalk). So that the elemental chemical components and the production process for most commercial glass.

Another typical and more durable form of glass is borosilicate glass. This type of glass increases the silica content to (70-80%) and reduces soda ash, partially replaced with boric oxide (7-13%), increasing its strength and thermal shock resistance. It is, therefore, less prone to breakage when it has a rapid extreme temperature change. Numerous borosilicate glass products are known for the best safe food storage, and you can place them in the freezer.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is one of the safest food storage containers and an excellent replacement for plastic. Decrease your plastic usage and choose a stainless steel food storage container. So please eliminate cheap plastic containers that are bad for your health and easily warp and clutter our landfills with plastic waste. If you wonder, are stainless steel containers safe for food storage? Yes, they are indeed safe.

Stainless steel is non-staining and non-porous. Even the most fragrant foods and colors, such as tomato sauce, will not stay on in a stainless steel container without evidence they were there after one single wash. These containers are refrigerator safe, making them an excellent alternative for leftovers or lunches. The only thing is they cannot put them in the microwave, but you can put them in the oven up to 450 degrees F or whatever the directions say.

Stainless steel is non-porous, preventing contamination, and commercial kitchens and hospitals use it. High-grade stainless steel also keeps food fresh when stored in an airtight container. This extends the life of your food and prevents decay and, for this reason, wastage. It is also inactive to alkalis and acids, which is a problem at times produced by certain foods and vegetables, unlike plastic containers.

Single-use plastics were created for convenience, but there's no question that plastic is one of the world's most significant environmental hazards. Plastic begins polluting the environment as it is manufactured using fossil fuels, and that's not all — 91% of plastic cannot be recycled, and the majority ends up in landfills and waterways, which takes nearly 400 years to break down. In the meantime, we face the dire prediction that by mid-century, the world's oceans will contain more plastic rubbish than fish, ton for ton.

Why choose food-grade silicone? Because it is better for you and the environment. Silicone is exceptionally durable yet lightweight and holds from freezer to microwave, oven, and dishwasher without leaching chemicals. These are the benefits:

  • Very resistant to damage and deterioration from extreme temperatures
  • If cared for properly, it won't harden, crack, peel, crumble, dry out, rot, or become brittle over time
  • Lightweight saves space, easy to transport
  • Food safe and odorless – contains no BPA, latex, lead, or phthalates

Yes, silicon, you can recycle them; check your local recycling center for information on silicone recycling options.

When to Upgrade Your Food Container Storage

There are several reasons to upgrade your containers for health safety, mainly if you use plastic yogurt or takeout tubs. Number one, you can't see through yogurt containers, so when the lid is on, you quickly forget what you got in there (and let it rot). Next, they aren't airtight, so transporting them to work for lunch can be messy because of leakage. Third, some plastic containers are not all FDA-approved for repeat food storage or microwaving, and do not forget that many of them can harm you and your family's health.

By upgrading to more-durable glass, stainless steel, or silicon for food storage, you can be sure they will last longer and preserve the freshness of food (but, since lids are typically plastic, you might need to replace those that come with the glass containers before the containers themselves give out). And whether your current containers are chipped or warped, it's another indication that it might be time to replace them. They will not seal properly; a chip or crack can run and cause more damage down the line.
